Wind class Strike Carrier

The Wind class strike carrier is a particular artefact of the escalating tensions in the Spinward Marches. Designed and created for the transport of heavy fighters to the battlefront, strike carriers are also well-armed, reasonably armoured, and capable of standing in battle against most enemies.

Atlantic class Heavy Cruiser

This class of cruiser has proven popular with the Navy for independent missions, especially beyond the Imperial border. Used alone, the ships are capable of a variety of diplomatic and scientific operations. Used in squadrons, they provide a useful show of force or reinforcement for friendly client-states. The ship’s cargo hold can be used to barrack up to 100 marines for small commando operations, boarding parties, and general ship defence.

Reportedly, some examples of the Atlantic class have been fitted with black globe force field generators. This has not been confirmed.

A total of 794 ships were produced, of which approximately 500 remain in service. The Atlantic class is now considered a second line ship. Approximately sixty examples have been transferred, sold, or disposed of to client-states of the Imperium. Recipients include several Vargr nations along the Corridor, Aslan colonial governments allied with or friendly to the Imperium, and many local human worlds within the Imperium.

Kokirrak class Dreadnaught

The Kokirrak class is a preferred ship for flagship operations due to its extensive admiral’s quarters, which include command and communications equipment, as well as entertainment chambers. The ship is capable of controlling a large fleet engagement within a system, as well as holding its own in battle; the combination of fleet controller and line-of-battle ship makes it an asset in nearly any space combat situation.

Normally, the Kokirrak class does not carry troops. It is possible to install modular quarters for up to 2,000 troops (usually only 1,000 are carried) in the cargo hold. A squadron of eight Kokirraks can carry between 8,000 and 16,000 troops, the equivalent of a reinforced division.

This class of dreadnaught, when originally designed and constructed, mounted black globe force field generators. Over the years, various ships have suffered black globe generator failures, and the devices have not been replaced. When encountered, there is approximately a 50% chance that the ship will mount a functioning black globe.

The Kokirrak class is one of the oldest class of dreadnaughts in Imperial service, and are now being phased out of service. Within the last decade, several ships have been disposed of to other services such as the scouts, and to other governments, including sector navies and client-states in the Spinward border regions of the Imperium.

Plankwell class Dreadnaught

Plankwell class dreadnaughts are named for notable admirals in the Imperial Navy. The class name is taken from Grand Admiral Olav hault-Plankwell, a sector admiral who rose to Grand Admiral of the Marches and defeated the Outworld Coalition during the First Frontier War (589 to 604). Following his victory, he led the fleet to Core, personally dispatched Empress Jaqueline I, and took over the government. The result was the long, bloody Civil War; Olav was the first of the Emperors of the Flag. Although Olav is in disrepute as an emperor, Grand Admiral Plankwell is still remembered and honoured for his achievements as a naval commander; significantly, his name has not been assigned to any ship in the new Cleon class of battle riders, named for emperors of the Imperium.

Plankwell class dreadnaughts are built using a modular design and construction technique which has proven cost-effective in commercial shipbuilding. A central strut or keel serves as a foundation, bracing the drives and aligning the spinal mount, while all other parts of the ship are mounted to brackets or strengthened points along it. The technique allows separate construction of the various modules (such as quarters, electronics areas, fuel tankage, and control areas) with a final mating of all the various components being performed only after the drives and keel have been tested and accepted. There was some initial concern that the connecting points would be foci for weakness in battle, but the losses of two separate Plankwells in combat have been attributed by investigating boards to strategic misdirection.

Tigress class Dreadnaught

Although some older battleships of greater displacement remain in service, the Tigress class dreadnaught is the largest line-of-battle vessel currently in service with the Imperial Navy. Each BatRon of Tigress class vessels is virtually a fleet unto itself, as each ship carries thirty squadrons of Fury class heavy fighters (with ten per squadron). A BatRon of eight ships carries 2,400 heavy fighters.

Tigress class BatRons are generally assigned one per sector. In war, the ideal deployment of any BatRon is together as a unit. In peace, various Tigresses are often scattered throughout a region on peacekeeping missions or to show the flag. Several individual Tigresses have been deployed among the worlds of the Five Sisters subsector to enforce the amber zone blockade of Candory and Andor.

Construction: The Tigress class is produced using an armoured spherical hull with a single spinal meson gun mounted centrally. A large armoured port protects the gun during non-combat operations; the port itself contains focussing equipment for the weapon beam.

Within the sphere, layered decks hold the various on-ship functions such as quarters, computer and electronic equipment, fuel treatment, and maintenance areas. Appended to the back of the sphere is a large, heavy fighter launch and recovery installation. Fighters are launched to the rear, to starboard, and recovered from the rear, to port; this arrangement prevents them from entering the meson beam when it is in use, as well as providing some armoured bulk between the fighters and the enemy.

Libuka class Troop Carrier

The Libuka class Troop Carrier is one of the largest starships mass-produced in the Imperium. Displacing 1.5 million tons, the Libuka’s purpose is as a corps’ Base Ship. That is, it carries a corps-sized troop unit, their equipment, and enough supplies for one month’s operations on planet.

In addition to supplies (food, water, sundries, etc.) and vehicle stowage, 10 dtons are allocated per trooper. This generous space allowance permits troopers to train while en route, thus maintaining their combat efficiency.

The Libuka is such a big and important target that adding weapons seemed superfluous to its designers: it cannot afford to engage in combat. Instead, it was envisaged that the Libuka would be screened by a large array of escorts. This had the secondary advantage of keeping large numbers of hardpoints free as docking points for landing craft (carried on another vessel) and the corps’ APCs.

An assault squadron may have 5 Libuka class Troop Carriers and a Workhorse class Ordanance Carrier (which carries additional supplies and a large number of modular cutters).

The Chaarnihom

The Chaarnihom is a unique 20,000 dton dispersed-structure vessel operating along the Spinward Main. It was never intended to be a merchant ship. It began as Yori’s planned orbital highport and was sold unfinished after a religious and political reversal made the project unacceptable.

From a distance, the ship resembles a dark radial framework: five principal arms extend from a central core, with docking clusters, incomplete concourse sections and service booms projecting at irregular angles. Its current merchant role occupies only part of a structure designed for a much larger permanent population.

The intended highport

Yori’s Advisors commissioned the project in 1093, during the ascendance of Chaarni. RINA (Rhylanor Interstellar Navy Architects) produced the design, and LSP began construction at Lunion in 1097.

The name Chaarnihom means ‘In honour of Chaarni’. The original station incorporated three command bridges, extensive point-defence weaponry, nuclear dampers, ten docking clusters, ten 500-dton dry docks, modular-cutter facilities, launches, troop accommodation and a large public concourse.

Because the structure was built at Lunion, it was fitted with Jump-1 drives and enough fuel for two jumps. After arrival at Yori, the jump machinery was to be removed and sold, recovering part of the construction cost.

Cost and cancellation

The original budget was MCr5,000. RINA’s final design raised this to MCr5,616, and construction was complicated further by religious blessing ceremonies required at various stages.

In 1104, Chaarni ceased to be the ascendant god and Zelodeous rose in their place. The new religious climate rejected the project as extravagant, technologically indulgent and symbolically tied to the previous era. Yori’s effective industrial technology also fell, making completion and long-term support increasingly difficult.

With much of the interior still unfinished, the government cancelled the contract and sold the structure at auction for just over MCr3,851.

From station to merchant

Vable Shipping of Mora purchased the Chaarnihom and placed it into service as a bulk carrier almost immediately. The company operated the vessel in its unfinished condition and collapsed within six months.

Ownership then passed to Hortalez et Cie. The bank continues to operate the vessel while deciding whether to sell, convert or dismantle it. Captains and specialist crew are hired on short- and medium-term contracts, so the ship’s command culture changes repeatedly.

Life aboard

Only part of the Chaarnihom is in regular use. Unfinished sections contain bare frameworks, sealed shafts, abandoned wiring trunks and corridors that end at temporary bulkheads. Some former highport areas are used as storage; others remain inaccessible.

The main concourse was designed to contain boutique shops and public services. Its cubicles, balconies and ceremonial spaces remain, but many are empty or converted into improvised accommodation and workshops.

The interior is heavily decorated with Chaarni-era religious motifs. Dark metalwork, geometric panels, sacred inscriptions and ceremonial lighting give the vessel a sombre, monumental atmosphere.

The short-contract crew produces little continuity. Engineers know one collection of faults, stewards another, and the next captain may reorganise everything before either group can document what they learned.

What the Chaarnihom means to Yori

The Chaarnihom is a physical record of Yori’s abrupt transition from the Chaarni era to the Zelodeous era. It represents technological confidence, commercial ambition and public spectacle rejected almost overnight.

Some Yorians regard it as an embarrassing monument to decadence. Others see it as a stolen national asset or as evidence that the Advisors can discard entire generations of effort when ascendance changes.

Because it still travels the Spinward Main, the Chaarnihom carries an obsolete version of Yori into systems whose atlases and assumptions may already be decades out of date.

Referee’s Notes

The Chaarnihom is large for a player-controlled vessel, but its limitations make it less powerful than its size suggests. It is slow, unarmed, expensive to operate, under-crewed and plagued by incomplete construction.

The ship works especially well as a campaign base, temporary employer, mystery location or moving community. Its incomplete highport spaces can conceal forgotten compartments, abandoned construction equipment, undocumented religious chambers, stolen cargo or evidence left by Vable Shipping.

  • A sealed religious chamber begins drawing power despite having no documented systems.
  • Hortalez sends auditors aboard just as evidence of Vable Shipping fraud emerges.
  • One unused docking cluster contains a vessel nobody admits installing.
  • A former Yorian Advisor claims that sacred objects remain aboard and demands their return.
  • The crew discover that one of the supposedly removed point-defence systems was never removed at all.
  • Passengers begin reporting identical dreams near an unfinished concourse shrine.
  • The bank orders the ship sold for scrap, forcing crew and residents to prove it has greater value intact.

Panther class Experimental Frigate

To mark the year 1100, the Imperial Navy challenged naval architects across the Imperium to come up with innovative new design concepts. RINA (Rhylanor Interstellar Navy Architects), a small design house specialising in unusual requirements, came up with a concept ship they named the Panther. The idea was for the smallest, and thus cheapest, ship capable of carrying a 100 dton meson gun while keeping up with standard fleet units (ie. Jump-4 and 6G).

RINA’s design used two tricks to achieve this. First, rather than carry a power plant capable of meeting all energy requirements for the duration of a cruise (28 days), two power plants were installed: one for 28 days of normal use, and another for 30 hours of combat activities. Second, the main weapon could only fire at half the normal rate: energy had to be built up in the ship’s jump drive capacitors. This later trick effectively halved the EPs/turn required by such a weapon. For defence, the Panther relied solely on moderately high agility.

In the end, only an initial run of 4 Panthers were built (unimaginatively named Panther-1, Panther-2, Panther-3, and Panther-4). Panther-2 was destroyed in early trials, but the remaining three still function together as a squadron.

Sagan class Patrol Cruiser

The Sagan class Patrol Cruiser was the mainstay of the ROM navy. These small cruisers, under the authority of the ROM Patrol, fulfilled the functions of the Imperium’s Suleiman class Scout/Courier and Lurushaar Kilaalum class Patrol Cruiser. Indeed, both designs owe their basic shape to the Sagan as a tribute to its hardworking heritage.

Only two working examples survived the Long Night, however, one in the Imperial Archive Museum on Capital/Core; the other on permanent display in the Congressional Museum on Dingir/Solomani Rim.

Antiama class Fleet Carrier

Also known in naval circles as the mother ship, the fleet carrier is a transport and launch facility for heavy fighters. Its main purpose is the carriage of heavy fighters across interstellar distances to the site of battle. In peace, the fleet carrier is a mobile port and repair facility for its brood; in war, it is a formidable fleet element to be respected.

The fleet carrier is an example of the continuing evolution of starship functions. In this case, it represents a splitting off of the fighter carrier operations of older battleships, placing the responsibilities all in a single ship designed for the purpose. Where once a large dreadnaught would carry regiments of troops, phalanxes of fighters, and myriad weapons mounts, current practice is to split these various tasks into individual ships. Naval doctrine is to carry troops on troop transports, fighters on fighter carriers, and large weapons for the line of battle on battleships.

Class Names: The Antiama class fleet carriers are named for empresses and consorts from Imperial history.
