Certificates

Introduction

William F. Hostman wrote an article on certification of characters which can be found on Freelance Traveller. I’ve decided to implement this in my campaigns but with some minor amendments to the list of Certificates/Tickets. The revised certificate list can be found below. In my campaigns the Imperial Navy tests for and awards these civilian qualifications to its personnel as a perk … aiding retiring spacers to pursue a career in civilian spacing if they so wish.

A certified pilot can also get ‘rated’ on specific ships. To get rated on a specific class of ship (e.g. Beowulf class Free Trader) takes 1 month’s general experience under the tutorage of a Master Pilot. Apply a -1 penalty to any piloting roll involving any ship class not experienced in (it’s possible to have gained the experience without the official tutorage and thus avoid the penalty yet not be ‘rated’).

A certified gunner can also get rated on specific weapons. To get rated on a specific type of weapon (e.g. pulse lasers) takes 1 month’s general experience under the tutorage of a Master Gunner. Apply a -1 penalty to any gunnery roll involving any turret weapon not experienced in (its possible to have gained the experience without the official tutorage and thus avoid the penalty yet not be ‘rated’).).

A certified drive engineer is familiar with one make of engine (e.g. LSP) per engineering skill level. Apply a -1 penalty to any engineering roll involving an engine of unfamiliar make, or a -2 penalty to any engineering roll involving an engine made by a corporation of another state (e.g. an Imperial engineer dealing with a Zhodani engine).
