Author’s Notes
for Efate (Regina 0105)
This write-up is based on campaign notes reaching back over several years. As I am an MT player rather than GURPS I have used only some parts of the new GURPS:Traveller stuff … and may even contradict minor points in GURPS:Traveller products like Behind The Claw. This is not a comment on GURP:Traveller or any of its supplements.
Because it is from my campaign, it uses MegaTraveller rules (where applicable) and is set in the ‘classic’ era. Although it is set ‘IMTU’, I have tried to match all canon sources I could find (see note about GURPS:Traveller in the paragraph above). Other info comes from TNE and Rob Eaglestone’s trade rules (available at Downport.com).
I should also say that I had already written a significant portion of the material here before I discovered Alvin Plummer’s RICE paper (AWP-00301) on Efate. Thus this landgrab and his RICE paper are incompatible. (Doh!)
For atmosphere, the capitol of Lakatoro is very much like the city from the film “Bladerunner”. Also, in addition to the ‘Nam parallels, I drew some inspiration from a Battletech novel “Ideal War” by Christopher Kubasik.
Finally, the thing to remember about any conflict is that few people think of themselves as the villains … both sides feel they have a legitimate grievance with which to justify their actions.

In 5FW boardgame (as of 1107) Efate is …
- TL13
- Starport A
- 150 SDBs
- 1 Colonial J4 Batron (3-3-6)
- 1 Colonial J4 streamlined Cruron (1-2-6)
- 1 assault carrier squadron
- 1000 defence battalions
- 1 Colonial Lift Infantry Corps (1C-13)
- 1 Mercenary Division PSG (20-14)
- 1 1C-factor troop
- at least 3 of the 10 Ine Givar guerrilla units on planet (each have 10% local defence battalions in strength and are of local TL … or “1C-13” each) IMTU I chose 5 units.
Some of these military forces arrived after 1105 and are described in TAS stories.
Other canon sources are an adventure in Challenge Magazine #50 that describes the world leader as Baron Urnst von Alksburg. Plus a number of early TNS entries and a mention in “The Mountain Environment”. (In the last, it mentions air pressure at sea level is 0.65 atm with a taint requiring a filter mask, the temperature at the mountain’s base (1.5km above sea level) is 30° C in the summer.)
