Planetary Defence Forces
of Yori (Regina 0510)

Introduction

Yori’s military is very young and, as yet, unproven. This immaturity is reflected in the lack of variation in the organisational structure (only three styles of battalion, four if you count the ‘partisan’ variation), its choice of equipment, and its lack of trained personnel. COACC (with its 8 Aerospace Groups) is integrated into the army.

Given the youthfulness of Yori’s army, it would not be surprising if there were no highly trained personnel. However, some Yorians leave the planet each year and sign up with the Imperial Army. Even so, half the army’s personnel are still trainee recruits.

5%Veteran
39%Regular

Their religious beliefs have led Yorian soldiers to have greater resolve than might be expected for their experience levels, and they are not so easily routed. (Players’ Manual p85: Yorian soldiers never have worse than “Average” morale. Referee’s Companion p13: No “Permanent Modifiers” to morale.)

Organisation

Yori’s surface defence is administered as six military districts, each surrounding one of the major cities: Big Rock Mountain, Devil’s Fork, Market, Hemdian, Bon-Fargoa, and Baxter. (Geronemo and the starport are included within Market’s district.)

Desert-style Battalion

Desert-style battalion organisation

A Desert-style battalion is so-called because it is intended to fight in the wide desert that dominants much of Yori’s surface. It emphasises tanks over infantry, carries extra supplies and engineers, and its defence company is specialised in point-defence. A Desert-style battalion has a headquarters company (with a command post and 2 cavalry platoon), a ‘defence’ company (with 3 point-defence platoons), and 3 ‘combat’ companies (each with a command post, an infantry platoon, an artillery platoon, and 3 tank platoons).

  • Command Post: 1 Grafton APC with 2 infantry teams and 1 Grafton-2 APC with officers.
  • Tank Platoon: 5 Chatham MBTs and 1 Essor recon drone.
  • Artillery Platoon: 5 Portland ASVs (MRLS) and 1 Essor recon drone.
  • Infantry Platoon: 5 Grafton APCs with 2 infantry teams in each.
  • Cavalry Platoon: 5 Shelburne utility vehicles with an engineering team in each.
  • Anti-tank Platoon: 5 Grafton APCs with an anti-tank team in each.
  • Point Defence Platoon: 5 Portland ASVs (SAM).

… 108 vehicles and 12 drones per battalion.

Mountain-style Battalion

Mountain-style battalion organisation

A Mountain-style battalion is so-called because it is intended to fight in the mountains and passes of Yori. While technically a battalion, it is designed to fight as independent companies. It has 3 ‘combat’ companies (each with a command post, an anti-tank platoon, a point-defence platoon, an artillery platoon, 3 infantry platoons, and a cavalry platoon). A Mountain-style battalion has no tanks.

  • Command Post: 1 Grafton APC with 2 infantry teams and 1 Grafton-2 APC with officers.

… 111 vehicles and 1 drone per battalion.

About half the Mountain-style battalion companies have not yet received their full equipment issue and have improvised with generic trucks and other civilian vehicles. These battalions and/or companies and called “partisan” units.

  • Command Post: 1 or 2 generic truck(s) with 2 infantry teams and 1 Grafton-2 APC with officers.
  • Artillery Platoon: 5 Portland ASVs (MRLS) and 1 Essor recon drone.
  • Infantry Platoon: several generic trucks with 10 infantry teams in total.
  • Cavalry Platoon: several generic trucks with 5 engineering teams in total.
  • Anti-tank Platoon: 5 generic trucks with an anti-tank team in each.
  • Point Defence Platoon: 5 Portland ASVs (SAM).

… a variable number of vehicles and 1 drone per battalion.

Scarland-style Battalion

Scarland-style battalion organisation

A Scarland-style battalion is so-called because it is intended to fight on the fertile plains of Scarland. It has a headquarters company (with a command post and a cavalry platoon), a ‘defence’ company (with an artillery platoon, a point-defence platoon, and an anti-tank platoon), and 3 ‘combat’ companies (each with a command post, a tank platoon, an artillery platoon, and 3 infantry platoons).

  • Point Defense Platoon: 5 Portland ASVs (SAM).

… 103 vehicles and 7 drones per battalion.

Aero Group

Aero Group organisation

The Aero Group, sometimes called the Aerospace Group, is a COACC unit comprised of 45 general-purpose fighter/bombers (organised as 9 squadrons) and 15 transport craft (organised as 3 squadrons). The fighter/bombers can be tasked with recon missions, attack/ground support, and even interceptor missions. The transport craft are used for rapid resupply of ground units in the field.

Special Forces

A special forces unit, called the “Hand of God”, exists as part of the T’Lana Esh.

Equipment

Vehicles

AFVs

The main AFVs (Armoured Fighting Vehicles) of Yori’s army were all supplied in a single rushed contract, and their designs look more like unfinished prototypes. Because of the time constraints in the contract Baxter Motors (who won the contract) designed a single AFV platform from which a number of variants were produced.

Drones

Essor Recon Drone:

The Essor recon drone (assigned to each tank platoon and artillery platoon) is an offworld design made under licence by the Alchemy Motor Company. Although assigned one per tank or artillery platoon in practise the recon drones present in a skirmish reform into their own unit to coordinate their activities.

Aircraft

Even where gravetic technology is commonplace, up to TL13 more conventional winged aircraft have the performance edge in an atmosphere. Thus, Yori’s only aerofighter craft design is a triple air-breathing jet engine fixed-wing aircraft.

Spacecraft

The Yorian Army also has one Dragon class TL15 SDB (the “Mongoose”). For about 6 weeks out of every year the Mongoose transfers to Regina, via warp shuttle for annual maintenance. During those times the Imperial Navy usually supplies a substitute craft (for example a Kinunir class Colonial Cruiser).

Personal Gear

Armour

Infantry troopers in Scarland-style and Desert-style battalions are equipped with Combat Armor (AR=10, TL12, 10kg, Cr30,000). Infantry troopers in Mountain-style battalions are equipped with lighter Combat Environment Suits (AR=6, TL10, 2kg, Cr1000). Partisan infantry troopers are equipped with Cloth (AR=5, TL6, 2kg, Cr250). Vehicle crews and non-frontline personnel are equipped with Flak Jackets (AR=3, TL7, 1kg, Cr100). All personnel armour, regardless of type, is produced locally.

Weapons

Yori’s army has decided to make gauss weapons their standard for personal weapons. While ammunition is produced locally, the weapons themselves (with the exception of the Automag) are provided by the megacorporation Delgado LIC … from their 1102 catalogue.

Delgado GR-402G (4mm Gauss Rifle):

This high-tech slugthrower is the standard issue personal weapon of the Yorian army. It has a battlefield sight, a RAM grenade launcher, gyrostabilisation, and a sling.

The Imperial Military Standard Issue TL13 ATRL (aka “Viper”) is made under license by both Interstellarms and Ling Standard Products. It is a double tubed (over & under) disposable launcher. Both rockets are launched at the same target in one combat round. The first rocket is unguided, the second homes in on the first so that both strike the same spot on the target in short sequence. (Roll once to hit, if point defence knocks out the first missile the second misses automatically.)

Personal Load

A Desert Trooper in the Yorian Army (Yori/Regina) is trained to be able to fight in CEFO (Complete Equipment Fighting Order). That is, he must be prepared to carry equipment for all his operational needs for extended periods, without support. However, as this weighs in at almost 50 kg this is seldom done except in training and fitness exercises … much is normally left in the trooper’s APC. The full set of personal equipment for a trooper is called his Personal Load.

The Desert Trooper’s personal load (TL13) is as follows:

  • GR-402G Gauss Rifle (3.5 kg unloaded)
    • rifle magazine (0.4 kg)
    • grenade magazine (0.6 kg)
  • Desert ‘Whites’: (negligible weight)
    • rugged, lightweight, long-sleeved white shirt
    • rugged, lightweight, long comfortable white pants
    • sturdy hiking boots
    • broad-rimmed white hat
    • lightweight, plastic eye googles (to protect against dust and sunglare)
  • TL13 hand computer (0.5 kg)
  • Webbing (0.45 kg unloaded)
    • 5 Rifle Magazines (2 kg)
    • 5 Grenade Magazines (3 kg)
    • TL12 Image Convertor Binoculars (0.5 kg)
    • Handheld Communicator (0.5 kg)
  • 30-Liter Backpack with detachable ammo pack (1.8 kg unloaded)
    • Combat Armour (10 kg)
    • Sleeping Bag (1.8 kg)
    • Personal Grooming Kit (0.85 kg)
    • Armour Deodorant (0.015 kg)
    • Armour Repair Kit (5 kg)
    • Clothing Repair Kit (0.15 kg)
    • 7 days Survival Rations (2.625 kg)
    • 15 Rifle Magazines (6 kg)
    • 5 Grenade Magazines (3 kg)
    • Reflective Tarpaulin (0.175 kg)
    • Personal Items (0.385 kg)
  • 6-Liter Chest pack (0.6 kg unloaded)
    • Desert Survival Kit (1 kg empty + 1 kg water)
      • 1-liter canteen
      • first aid kit (incl. TL12 pocket med scanner)
      • salt tablets
      • folding shovel
      • solar still kit x3 (plastic, straws, watertraps, etc)
      • knife and sheath
      • signal mirror
      • handheld distress flares x3
      • water purification kit (250 tablets)
      • filter straw (with ceramic filter capable of filtering out all non-chemical contaminants bigger than viruses)
    • Mess kit (0.175 kg)
    • Sunblock and Insect Repellent Cream (0.45 kg)
    • Longarm Cleaning Kit (0.65 kg)
    • 2-Liter Canteen (0.45 empty + 2 kg water)
    • Personal Items (0.275 kg)

This gives a total mass of 49.85 kg (which weighs 48.853 kg in Yori’s 0.98G). The load includes 3 liters of water, food for 7 days, 21 gauss rifle magazines (840 needle rounds), and 11 grenade magazines (33 grenades … HE, HEAP, and/or flechette). It also includes a small allowance of 0.66 kg for personal items (such as a religious book, a letter writing kit, personal keepsakes, etc).

Given that humans require up to 13.5 litres of water a day the 3 litres shown here are clearly inadequate. Basic training focuses just as much on “water recons” as it does on combat skills, and water supply runs to “the front” are just as frequent as ammo supply runs.

In planned combat the backpack (but not the ammo pack) and chest pack are dropped, and the combat armour is donned … reducing carried mass to just 31.25 kg. (Another 9.8 kg can be removed with the loss of the ammo pack, but this is not common practice.)
